Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program

Friday, 8 November 2013
Pulmonary rehabilitation is a comprehensive program for people living with chronic lung disease who have symptoms of breathlessness and often have a decreased ability to perform the activities of daily life.

Programs are individually tailored and designed to optimise physical and social wellbeing.

The aims of pulmonary rehabilitation are:

  • Increase physical fitness
  • Improve quality of life
  • Increase the participant’s ability to cope and manage the acute and chronic phases of chronic lung disease
  • Reduce hospital admissions and length of stay in hospital.

The program consists of an individual assessment followed by exercise training and education on a variety of subjects that assist with managing your health. At the end of the program there is a reassessment and an agreed plan so participants will be able to maintain the benefits gained through the program.

Portland District health runs three of these eight-week programs per year. The next program is scheduled for February 2014.
