Pulmonary Rehabilitation

A move from Swan Hill to Portland and enrolment in Portland District Health’s Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program has been a breath of fresh air for Marlene Murphy.

Mrs Murphy, who has emphysema, has recently completed the eight-week rehabilitation program which is based at Active Health Portland and says she feels much better from the experience.

I do feel better and I think the program has helped me,she said.

Mrs Murphy and her husband moved to Portland earlier this year from Swan Hill.

My husband wanted to get out of the hot weather and I think it has been good for me too. The temperatures are more consistent here; it doesn’t get really cold at night, she said.

Although born in Cobden, Mrs Murphy had spent most of her life in the Swan Hill region but she has relatives around Portland.

Although she gave up her long-time smoking habit 17 years ago, Mrs Murphy was diagnosed with emphysema three years ago.

I may have had it earlier. Five years ago I was really sick with a chest infection and bronchitis that I couldn’t get rid of,she said.

This winter she needed only one dose of antibiotics to get her through the cold season, a reduction on her normal dosage.

She believes the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program has played a significant role in her better health and she hopes to continue to put into practice some of the lessons and exercises.

It was one hour of exercise and one hour of education. The education was about diet, medication, stress, anxiety and more common sense stuff but it was good to hear it again, she said.

I have a dodgy knee so had to adjust the exercise program to fit but the girls in the exercise program were fantastic and Active Health is a marvellous spot.

I would recommend anyone with issues like mine to do the program.

Anyone interested in the program can contact PDH respiratory nurse Helen Anderson on 5521 0626.
