PDH Seek Consumer Input

Thursday, 7 May 2015
Portland District Health’s has recruited new community members for the Consumer Advisory Committee but wants more local people to have their say.

Pat Mibus is the latest community representative to join the committee.

I have been involved in consumer advisory groups before and enjoyed working with others to achieve desired outcomes,” Ms Mibus said. I love working with the community and care about people.

Ms Mibus has 18 years’ experience working in quality excellence in the health care industry.

Reverend Naish is the committee’s pastoral representative and joined the committee as an inaugural member in February 2013.

I believe PDH is an essential service within our town and surrounding area. Best possible outcomes are achieved when good communications are achieved between service providers and consumers. I believe pastoral care is an important element in the holistic care of patients.

PDH Quality Coordinator Wendy Buckland said new youth and maternity services consumer representatives were specifically needed on the committee, but other interested community members are also encouraged to join.

The committee also consists of volunteer representative Ellie Lane, patient representative Julie Rogers, service group representative Steve Ellis, board member Anita Rank, PDH community engagement coordinator Carolyn Malseed and Ms Buckland.

"We want to have representation from a broad cross section of the community," Ms Buckland said.

During the three years of its operation, the committee has had a positive impact on the health service and influenced many outcomes to improve service for consumers.

The committee looks at service delivery issues that affect patients,Ms Buckland said. This could relate to signage, access, brochures, the Quality of Care report and monitoring complaints and compliments.

The committee has been an active voice on car parking issues, the design of the allied health precinct, social media and signage. Ms Buckland said the committees influence had led to new parking limits in Fern Street and additional directional signs in the hospital.

Anyone interested in becoming a member of the committee can contact Ms Buckland at PDH on 55 210333.

The committee meets six times a year for about 1.5 hours. It also has regular email communication in between meetings.
