PDH Excels in Patient Survey

Portland District Health has excelled in a new survey with 97 per cent of patients rating their hospital experience as positive.

PDH exceeded the state average in every category in the survey and recorded 100 per cent positive responses in several categories, including the care from staff in the Emergency Department.

The Victorian Healthcare Experience Survey for April-June 2014 found that 97 per cent of PDH patients responding to the survey ranked their overall hospital experience as very good or good.

They had five options: very good, good, adequate, poor or very poor. The survey had a high response rate of 44 per cent for PDH.

Many of those responding to the survey made particular mention of the quality of staff and the friendly, caring atmosphere at the health centre.

PDH CEO Chris Giles said the results were very pleasing.

In all areas we are better than the state average and in most areas we are above our peer group average, Ms Giles said.

;There is a scale of five areas and to get 97 per cent of responses in the top two categories is a terrific outcome for PDH and a credit to our staff, she said.

Ms Giles added that PDH also took note of any negative feedback and would seek to continue improving its service to the community.

PDH Board of Management President Mike Noske said a high proportion of people made the effort to respond and to have such a positive response was very heartening.

The surveys are broader than the previous patient satisfaction surveys and deal with the whole experience and outcomes,Mr Noske said.

The results give us cause to think that the staff and hospital are providing much more patient-focussed care,” he said.

The questions have a strong emphasis on patient experience. Potential respondents are randomly selected from people who were discharged from the health service in the preceding month.
