New Director of Medical Services at PDH

Wednesday, 19 November 2014
Portland District Health’s new Director of Medical Services, Dr Brendan Condon, is looking forward to new challenges in the role.

As part of this new career opportunity for Dr Condon, he will be facing the challenge of maintaining a strong medical workforce in a rural hospital, and thereby contributing to the team effort to optimise health care for the Portland community.

We'll be looking closely at the workforce, trying to boost the whole gamut from General Practitioners, and other specialists, to junior doctors,he said.

Dr Condon will be based two days per week at PDH. He replaces Dr Peter Morton who had been acting in the role for the past six months.

Originally from Gippsland, Dr Condon studied medicine at Melbourne University before moving to Geelong as a medical resident and G.P.

He moved to Terang about 13 years ago and worked as a GP between Terang and Lismore for several years before adding a teaching role to his portfolio when Deakin University opened a branch of its School of Medicine in Warrnambool.

More recently he also became the supervisor of intern training at South West Healthcare for one day a week.

His PDH role adds to his list of career challenges.

I have an interest in medical administration and this fits perfectly as a part-time role for me to test the water, he said.

Dr Condon said retaining junior doctors in the region in Warrnambool, Hamilton and Portland would be one of his priorities. That is one of my areas of interest, so hopefully, from this position, I can help forge a rural generalist program of education and training for our junior doctors to try to keep them in the region,” he said.

Dr Condon will work each Wednesday and Thursday in Portland and will continue for two days with the university medical school and one day in his intern supervising role at the Warrnambool Base Hospital.

I always like to do something a bit different. It's good to have variety if you have interest in all of them.

I'm looking forward to working with the team at PDH. Everyone has been very welcoming.
