Maree Garside is enjoying a new challenge and a new location for her nursing career.

The experienced registered nurse has previously filled a variety of roles over many years at the Camperdown campus of South West Healthcare and has now moved into a ward management role at Portland District Health.

As the new nursing unit manager for PDH's acute ward, Ms Garside is keen to ensure the ward runs smoothly and that the local community is aware of all the services available and uses them when practical.

"We have very good services and want the community to take advantage of what we offer," Ms Garside said.

"Particularly we want to encourage and develop our midwifery services that are now supported by 24-7 anaesthetist coverage."

Ms Garside completed her nursing training at Aquinas College (now Australian Catholic University) in Ballarat and did her midwifery training at the University of Ballarat.

She was enticed to the role in Portland for the new challenge and for the more regular working hours to suit her school-aged children.

"It is less clinical work than I'm used to, and it's more about the underlying management of the ward," Ms Garside said. But that's part of the challenge for me, she added.

"I have budgets to monitor and have to do the hidden paperwork for staff and be there for staff when they need support. It's basically about making sure the ward runs smoothly," she added.

The move from Camperdown to Portland has been a positive one and Ms Garside loves her new work environment.

Everyone is very supportive and friendly and I love the sea views, even though my office doesn't have views," she added.
