A variety of free fitness activities are being offered on the Ploughed Field site opposite the hospital on February 16-20.

The activities start at 7am and are open to the general community. They are being presented as part of PDH's involvement in the Portland SEA Change (Sustainable Eating and Activity Change) program.

The sessions include chi ball presented by Jill Budde, stretchilates by Carrie Templeton, a YMCA fitness class by Grant Roberts and a class led by PDH accredited exercise physiologist Graeme Learmont

There will also be a boxing class led by Grant Roberts from 9am at Dhauwurd-Wurrung Elderly and Community Health Services Inc (DWECH) on Thursday February 19.

Portland District Health Director Primary and Community Health, Fiona Heenan, said the activities were designed to encourage people to try different physical activities and to use their local environment.

We are hoping people will try new activities and find something that works for them, Ms Heenan said.

The message is that everyone can do something.

The fitness program is part of a concerted effort to improve the health of local residents and reduce the level of local obesity.

Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show 49 per cent of women and 71 per cent of men in the Glenelg Shire are overweight or obese.

PDH staff are joining the health campaign with their own walking and fitness groups and new healthy eating programs.

PDH health promotion and allied health staff will also provide healthy breakfasts during Healthy Weight Week and provide information on food labels and healthy eating options.
