Thursday, 5 November 2015
Dr Cathy Bones’ medical career in Australia has come full circle with her return to Portland District Health.

Dr Bones has taken on a dual role at PDH as the new Director of Medical Services starting on November 5 and also working one day per week in the Emergency Department.

The corridors of PDH are nothing new to Dr Bones whose first medical appointment in Australia was in Portland. Dr Bones was a GP in the United Kingdom for nearly 10 years before migrating to Australia in 2000, to Portland, under the overseas trained doctor scheme. She worked in a private practice before gaining her Australasian Fellowship in General Practice in 2002 and starting her own practice. She combined general practice with sessions at Portland Aluminium in occupational medicine and was also a visiting medical officer at PDH where she managed inpatients and took part in the on-call roster until 2005

Dr Bones then pursued her interest in occupational medicine and became a Fellow of the Australasian Faculty of Occupational and Environmental Medicine in 2008, when she made the decision to leave general practice and became a full time occupational physician at Portland Aluminium.

For four years Dr Bones was part of the site lead management team where she maintained overview of the medical surveillance program, internal health audits and the day-to-day running of the occupational medical centre.

Between 2008-2012 Dr Bones was Director of Training for remotely located Occupational Physician Registrars in the Australasian Faculty of Occupational and Environmental training program.

She also settled down and married a local man, Mark in 2009.We live on a farm in Gorae, Mark and his son Dom are into motorbikes but I prefer the peace of riding in the bush on my horse, she said.

Dr Bones said she was looking forward to coming full circle and contributing to the leadership of the hospital with CEO Chris Giles and her team. PDH was significant in my recruitment back in 2000 and clinical governance and clinical quality are a passion of mine so I'm looking forward to working with the team, she said.
