Do you know your numbers?

Friday, 15 June 2012
Portland District Health (PDH) is offering free blood pressure checks next week at Portland Amcal Pharmacy in Percy Street.

Session times for the free testing will be Wednesday from 1pm to 3pm, Thursday from 10am to 12pm and 1pm to 3pm and Friday from 1pm to 3pm.

The free sessions are part of a National Stroke Foundation campaign that is urging people to know their blood pressure numbers and reduce their risk of stroke.

Nearly four million Australians over the age of 25 have high blood pressure but many are not aware.

The National Stroke Foundation’s ‘Know your Numbers’ campaign aims to raise awareness of high blood pressure or hypertension, as a major risk factor for stroke.  One in two people who participated in the ‘Know your Numbers’ pilot study had high blood pressure while almost half did not know their blood pressure numbers.

‘Know your Numbers’ is set up by local communities in partnership with the Pharmacy Guild of Australia, Rotary International and the YMCA.

“It’s important that people in our community know their blood pressure numbers”, Rosemary Cole, PDH Community Health nurse said.  “We invite men and women of all ages to stop by for a free, quick and painless test that could help to prevent a stroke”.

Professor Christopher Bladin, Medical Director of the National Stroke Foundation said that high blood pressure was the most important known risk factor for stroke.

“High blood pressure is often called the silent killer because there may be no symptoms” Professor Bladin said.  “The only way to know your blood pressure is to have it checked”.

Stroke is the second single biggest killer in Australia and a leading cause of disability.  This year Australians will suffer 60,000 new and recurrent strokes, that’s one stroke every 10 minutes.
