Having a baby at Portland District Health has helped Alana Jeffries to feel part of the local community.

Alana and her husband Zac gave birth to their first child, Ezekiel, on March 17

The couple moved to Portland in July last year. It was a homecoming for Zac who was raised in the area and returned to become director of teaching and learning at his old school Bayview College, but living in Portland was a new experience for Alana.

Their connection with PDH started in ante-natal classes, culminated in a 24-hour labour and caesarean birth and was followed by excellent after care and even a free membership with the Australian Breastfeeding Association Portland branch.

We got to build a good rapport with the midwives, Alana said. We were familiar with the hospital and staff and felt safe and welcomed to the area.

Ezekiel was the third generation in the Jeffries family to be born at PDH.

We have a nice history and connection to the place and we were pleased that could continue, Zac said. It was our preference to have our children in Portland.

Alana said the midwives and hospital staff were very welcoming and professional.

We were made to feel very comfortable and empowered. Everyone was very respectful of our birthing plan but intervened where necessary and communicated very well.

When it was determined that a caesarean was needed, the theatre was readied within an hour and the procedure was completed without complication.

I was worried but everyone reassured me that I was going to be okay, Alana said.

The expansion of PDH's midwifery service to 24-7 coverage and recruitment of two on-site obstetrician/gynaecologists has again allowed caesarean sections to be performed locally.

Alana stayed in hospital a further three nights and said the follow-up care was crucial for first-time parents. The midwives went above and beyond and we can't speak highly enough about the service, Zac added.
