Certificates of Appreciation were awarded to volunteers who have been delivering meals for over 20 years – some up to 30 years.
Member of the Board of Management Catherine Marr congratulated all the volunteers on the excellent service they give to the older members of our community. The volunteers provide a friendly face each day for meal recipients.
Chief Executive Officer Elaine Collins presented a brief history of the service – which began in the early 1970s in a very small way with Dr. Peter Fox identifying a few patients that would benefit from meals being delivered – which were then delivered by the district nurse.
Soon after in 1975 the Rev. Frank Tate took on the role as the first Meals on Wheels Coordinator, recruiting volunteers to deliver the meals. Mrs. Nell Padbury took on this role in 1989, followed by our current Coordinator Mrs. Betty O’Brien.
