Nurse Graduate Program

Portland District Health is a 68 bed acute hospital, offering a diverse range of opportunities for 6 graduate nurses over a 12 month program with one intake per year, commencing February.

 We offer a wide range of experience through a well planned Graduate Program. Graduates have the opportunity to take part in specialist rotations such as A&E, Theatre and District Nursing along with consolidating Acute and Medical skills.

Intake

We offer five graduate nurse positions at 0.8EFT . The program is 52 weeks duration, commencing in early February, with 5 weeks annual leave.

Orientation

New graduates will participate in four days of induction and orientation activities at commencement of the program and will then also be offered a full week supernumery in their first clinical rotation and further supernumery time in each specialty area

Clinical Component

We offer a variety of clinical rotations through the areas of Acute, Sub-acute, Emergency, Theatre and District. There are opportunities to undertake longer rotations in particular areas of interest such as Theatre and Emergency.

Theoretical Component

Graduate nurses will receive 72 hours of education during the program: 32 hours will include initial orientation and core competencies during induction week .40 hours will be negotiated paid study days depending on area of interest. Informal education, inservices and debriefing are held on a regular basis. Clinical based learning packages are available on line and must be completed throughout the year.
